SOUha Backdrop No.008 "KANOKO MOMI" / Woven Hemp

SOUha Backdrop No.008 "KANOKO MOMI" / Woven Hemp

KANOKO MOMI (鹿の子揉み)

redefines the tactile potential of professional backdrops. This exceptional, technical canvas is engineered by bonding authentic hand-woven hemp textiles onto a precision aluminum substrate, creating a unique synthesis of organic warmth and industrial durability.

Unlike standard flat backdrops, KANOKO MOMI features a masterfully hand-molded, three-dimensional texture. By meticulously crinkling the hemp-integrated surface, we have created an intricate landscape of micro-valleys and ridges. This topography ensures that light never hits the surface uniformly; instead, it catches the fibers at unpredictable angles, producing a depth-defying play of shadow and light that brings an unparalleled sense of atmosphere and professional dimension to your compositions.

Creative Efficiency

The ultimate strength of KANOKO MOMI lies in its ability to adapt: this single canvas acts as an infinite light modifier. Because the hand-molded irregularities break up light in complex, non-linear ways, shifting your lighting angle or modifier placement entirely transforms the visual profile of the scene—from subtle, moody gradients to high-contrast, texturally rich statements.

Is this an authentic piece? How should I care for it?

▶Unlike mass-produced vinyl prints, our products are crafted using genuine natural materials such as Washi paper, gold leaf, linen, stone, and real leaves. Each piece is individually finished by skilled Japanese artisans to ensure a unique texture and depth. To maintain its quality, gently remove dust with a soft brush or air duster. We recommend avoiding direct sunlight to preserve its authentic luster for decades.

Can I use it for vertical shots, or only for flat lays?

▶Absolutely. Since the material is flexible and paper-like, you can easily hang it vertically using clips to create a professional backdrop for straight-on shots. Beyond flat lays, the authentic physical textures capture light in a way that creates incredible depth. By using side lighting, you can achieve a sophisticated play of shadows and textures that changes beautifully with every angle.

Holding up great with no issues so far

Working great with zero issues so far. I saw quite a few reviews mentioning it being too thin or light, so I was a bit nervous, but the hemp weave actually has a decent thickness to it. I don't feel like it’s going to tear even if you place something slightly heavy on it. Might depend on the specific style, though?

Fair price for an authentic natural backdrop material

The color has that authentic raw material look. It would be nice to have more color options for extra versatility. That said, if you view it as a proper natural-material backdrop rather than just a flat solid-colored sheet, the price is totally reasonable.

Water-resistant on the front, but keep the back dry

Wanted to shoot with water droplets so I misted it lightly, and it held up totally fine. However, since the back is paper, it got a bit soggy where a stray drop hit the rear, so definitely avoid getting the back wet. A little moisture on the front is totally fine though.

The most striking and favorite piece yet

This is the 4th item I’ve bought from SOUha, and easily my favorite because it has the most impact. The look of hemp layered over silver paper looks so slick. Zero fraying on the threads either—you can really tell this is top-tier Made-in-Japan quality.

So fun for playing with shadows in product shots

It arrived! Playing around with shadows on this is so much fun. I’ve been scrunching up the paper by hand to create fine wrinkles for my shoots. That interplay of dimension and shadow really makes small items pop.5

Wish they offered a longer size for full-body shots

I wanted to use this for full-body photography, but it's just a bit too short. I'd love it if they came out with a 3-yard version too.

Surprisingly lightweight compared to vinyl

Super light and a breeze to carry around. The biggest difference from the vinyl surfaces in our studio is definitely the weight. Since it's genuine hemp weave backed with paper, it stays way lighter than vinyl. It arrived in a cardboard box, and it was so light before opening that I was honestly a bit worried!

Bold texture with adjustable intensity

Is that brown thread? Looks like it's woven with hemp, and I love the varying thread thickness. It gives off this bold, rugged vibe, kind of like stylized sand. If you want to tone down that intensity, you can just smooth out the wrinkles, so being able to control the look is a huge plus. My only minor gripe is that it's around 1 yard wide, so it can peek into frame if you're shooting from too far back.

Incredible 3D depth with an organic, non-mechanical look

This is amazing. It adds so much 3D depth to shots. Because the wrinkles are created organically, it completely avoids that cold, mechanical feel. Crumpling up the paper itself was a cool technique discovery for me too.
